Lesson#1
Welcome to this deck on the British sector of the Western Front. This is a specific historic environment study for your GCSE History exam. We'll leave the broad story of medicine through time behind and focus intensely on four years, 1914 to 1918, to see how the extreme conditions of World War One forced medical science to advance at an incredible speed.
Lesson#2
The Western Front was a 400-mile line of trenches stretching from the English Channel to Switzerland. After the initial German invasion of France was halted in 1914, both sides dug in. This created a situation of stalemate, where neither army could make a significant breakthrough, leading to years of brutal trench warfare.
Quiz#3
In military history, what term describes a situation where neither side in a conflict can make progress or win?

stalemate

Lesson#4
The trench system was complex, not just one long ditch. The frontline trench faced the enemy across No Man's Land. Behind it was the support trench, where troops could retreat to. Further back was the reserve trench, where reinforcements waited. These lines were all connected by communication trenches, allowing men and messages to move.
Quiz#5
In the World War One trench system, which trench was located closest to the enemy lines?

frontline trench

Quiz#6
