French Recent Past: Using 'venir de'

Learn to talk about the recent past in French using the 'venir de + infinitive' construction. This deck covers all forms of 'venir' for expressing events that have just happened.

A wide, cinematic photograph captures a person elegantly stepping out of an ornate Parisian building entrance onto a bustling cobblestone street at dusk, a soft glow from the streetlights illuminating their path. The scene evokes the feeling of "just arriving" or "just going out," with blurred figures and classic French architecture in the background.

Lesson#1
To talk about something that has just happened in French, you can use a special structure called the recent past, or 'passé récent'. It's very common in spoken French.
Lesson#2
The formula is simple: you take the verb 'venir' in the present tense, add the word 'de', and then follow it with the main verb in its infinitive form. For example, 'Je viens de manger' literally means 'I come from eating', but is used to say 'I have just eaten'.
Lesson#3
Let's start with the 'I' form. The present tense of 'venir' for 'je' is 'viens'. So, to say 'I have just done something', you use the phrase 'je viens de' followed by the action. For example, 'Je viens d'arriver' means 'I have just arrived'.
Quiz#4
Translate into French: 'I have just finished.'

Je viens de finir.

Quiz#5
Translate into French: 'I have just eaten.'

Je viens de manger.

Lesson#6
For the informal 'you', the form is 'tu viens de'. It sounds the same as the 'je' form, so the context of the conversation is important. For example, 'Tu viens de téléphoner' means 'You have just called'.
