Welcome to this deck on crime and punishment in medieval England, from around the year 1000 to 1500. We'll explore what was considered a crime, how laws were enforced without a police force, and the often brutal punishments used. We'll see how things changed dramatically after the Norman Conquest in 1066, and investigate the huge influence of the Church on justice. In Anglo-Saxon England, before 1066, most crimes were seen as disputes between individuals or families. Crimes against the person included assault and murder. Crimes against property, like stealing livestock or crops, were also common. The most serious crime, however, was treason – betraying your lord or king, as this threatened the entire social structure.

Anglo-Saxon law enforcement was a community effort. One key method was the 'tithing'. This was a group of ten men, all over the age of 12, who were responsible for each other's behaviour. If one member of the tithing broke the law, the other nine had to bring him to court or face a fine themselves.

Another community-based method was the 'hue and cry'. If someone witnessed a crime, they had to shout to raise the alarm. Anyone who heard the cry was expected to stop whatever they were doing and help chase down the suspected criminal. To ignore the hue and cry was a crime in itself.
