Lesson#1
In Brazilian Portuguese, softening what you say helps you sound polite rather than blunt. Instead of saying you want or need something, you can use the conditional mood to make courteous requests, ask favours, and soften opinions. This mood is built in a remarkably simple way directly from the verb infinitive.
Lesson#2
To form the conditional for regular verbs, keep the whole infinitive and add the ending I A. For both 'eu' and 'você', 'gostar' becomes 'gostaria'. This turns 'I want' into a gentle 'I would like'. 'Eu gostaria de falar com o gerente' means 'I would like to speak with the manager'.

The third person singular also takes the ending I A. So 'ele' or 'ela' uses 'gostaria' to express what someone else would like. For example, 'Ele gostaria de um café sem açúcar' means 'He would like a coffee without sugar'.

The verb 'poder' follows the exact same pattern: keep the infinitive and add I A to make 'poderia'. This is the standard courteous way to ask if someone can do something. 'Você poderia me ajudar?' means 'Could you help me?'.
