Giving Reasons and Conditions: Omdat, Als, and Dat

Master spoken Dutch subordinate clause word order with omdat, als, and dat by placing the conjugated verb at the very end of the clause.

A person sits comfortably inside a warm, cozy Dutch home, holding a steaming mug, and gazes out a large window at a rainy street scene with canals and historic brick buildings. The soft indoor lighting contrasts with the grey, damp exterior, conveying a sense of peaceful contemplation and the comfort of staying indoors.

Lesson#1
Welcome to Dutch A2 Part 1. By the end of this course, you will be able to connect your ideas smoothly, explain why things happened, and handle real-world conversations when plans change. With Auracle, you build spoken fluency through constant active recall and spaced repetition. Speaking out loud trains your brain to produce Dutch automatically without translating in your head. Each review arrives at the ideal moment so you remember what you learn permanently. Let us get started.
Lesson#2
In this deck, you will learn how to connect two ideas using dependent clauses in Dutch. You will discover how words like 'because', 'if', and 'that' change the rhythm of a sentence by sending the verb straight to the end. This is one of the most important steps toward speaking natural Dutch.
Lesson#3
In a standard Dutch sentence, the verb comes right after the person doing the action, as in 'Ik blijf thuis'. But when you give a reason using 'omdat', which means 'because', the conjugated verb moves to the very end of that clause. For example, 'Ik blijf thuis, omdat ik ziek ben' means 'I am staying at home because I am ill'.
Quiz#4
Using 'omdat', translate into Dutch: 'I am staying at home because I am ill.'

Ik blijf thuis omdat ik ziek ben

Quiz#5
Using 'omdat', translate into Dutch: 'We are drinking water because we are thirsty.'

Wij drinken water omdat we dorst hebben

Quiz#6
Using 'omdat', translate into Dutch: 'He is cooking because he is hungry.'

Hij kookt omdat hij honger heeft
