Lesson#1
In this deck, you will learn to connect events in time using Dutch temporal conjunctions. You will master 'toen', 'voordat', 'nadat', and 'terwijl' to explain when actions happened or describe things occurring simultaneously.
Lesson#2
The conjunction 'toen' means 'when' or 'at the time that'. It is used exclusively for a single completed event or a specific period in the past. In a subordinate clause, the conjugated verb moves to the very end. For example, 'We stapten in toen de trein aankwam' means 'We got on when the train arrived'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Dutch: 'We got on when the train arrived.'

We stapten in toen de trein aankwam

Quiz#4
Speaking to a friend, translate into Dutch: 'What did you do when the phone rang?'

Wat deed je toen de telefoon ging?

Quiz#5
Translate into Dutch: 'We went inside when it began to rain.'

We gingen naar binnen toen het begon te regenen

Lesson#6
When you front a temporal clause to the beginning of a sentence, the main clause must invert so its conjugated verb comes first. For example, 'Toen ik klein was, woonde ik in Utrecht' means 'When I was little, I lived in Utrecht'.
