In this deck, we'll explore how plants lose water through a process called transpiration. You'll learn the exact pathway water takes out of the leaf, what factors in the environment speed this up or slow it down, and how scientists can measure it.

Let's start with a clear definition. Transpiration is the loss of water vapour from the surfaces of leaves. It's essentially the plant equivalent of sweating.

This process happens in two main stages inside the leaf. First, water evaporates from the moist surfaces of the mesophyll cells into the air spaces within the leaf. Second, this water vapour then diffuses out of the leaf into the surrounding air through tiny pores called stomata.
