In Swedish, connecting two ideas often means using a subordinate clause. When you add words like 'not' or 'always' to these clauses, the word order changes from what you're used to in main sentences. In this deck, you'll learn the BIFF rule to place adverbs correctly every time.

In a standard Swedish main sentence, the verb comes second and 'inte' follows the verb, as in 'Hon kommer inte'. But in a subordinate clause, introduced by a connecting word like 'eftersom', meaning 'because', 'inte' jumps ahead of the verb. Swedes remember this with the BIFF rule: in a subordinate clause, 'inte' comes before the finite verb. For example, 'eftersom hon inte kommer' means 'because she is not coming'.

The subjunction 'att' means 'that'. When building a subordinate clause with 'att', the BIFF rule applies in the exact same way, placing 'inte' directly before the verb. For example, 'att han inte förstår' means 'that he does not understand'.
