In French, when you tell a story about the past, you need a way to set the scene. The imparfait tense is perfect for this. It's used to describe how things were: what the weather was like, how people were feeling, or what was happening in the background.
Lesson#2
Let's start with describing past states or feelings. If you want to say how you or someone else was feeling, or the state they were in, you use the imparfait. For example, to say 'I was tired', you would use the imparfait of 'être' and say 'J'étais fatigué'.
