Lesson#2
When a society punishes a criminal, what is it trying to achieve? For your exam, you need to know three key aims of punishment. These are retribution, deterrence, and reformation. Let's look at each one in turn.
Quiz#3
What aim of punishment is about getting revenge or making a criminal pay for their crime, often summed up as 'an eye for an eye'?

retribution

Quiz#4
What aim of punishment tries to put other people off from committing similar crimes?

deterrence

Quiz#5
What aim of punishment focuses on helping an offender to change their behaviour and become a law-abiding citizen?

reformation

Lesson#6
Christians hold diverse views on these aims. Retribution is supported by the Old Testament teaching of 'an eye for an eye', suggesting a fair and equal punishment. However, many Christians today prefer reformation, as it reflects Jesus's teachings on forgiveness and helping people to change for the better. Deterrence is generally accepted, as long as the punishment is just and proportionate.
