Christianity teaches that human sexuality is a gift from God, but it's a gift with a purpose. Traditionally, there are two main purposes. First, it's unitive, meaning it brings a couple closer together in a loving, exclusive relationship. Second, it's procreative, meaning it's the way new life is created. For your exam, remembering these two ideas, unitive and procreative, is the foundation for understanding Christian views on almost everything else in this topic.

Traditionally, Christianity has taught that sex should only take place within a heterosexual marriage. This view is based on the Bible, particularly the book of Genesis, which says a man and woman leave their parents and are united to become 'one flesh'. This is seen as God's plan for relationships.
