Present Tense Statements and Demonstrative Questions

Learn how to identify people, places, and objects using the Russian zero copula and form simple questions with 'кто это' and 'что это'.

A dramatic low-angle close-up photograph captures a young person's hand in sharp focus, gesturing towards the vibrant, onion-domed spires of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. The iconic architecture is slightly softened in the background, bathed in the rich golden light of a setting sun, creating a strong sense of depth and Russian cultural atmosphere.

Lesson#1
In this deck, you'll learn how to identify people, places, and everyday objects in Russian without using a verb for 'is' or 'are'. You'll also learn how to ask 'who is this?' and 'what is this?'. These simple structures are the starting point for describing the world around you in Russian.
Lesson#2
In Russian, there's no present-tense word for 'am', 'is', or 'are'. To state that something exists or identify what it is, you simply use the invariant word 'это'. For example, 'стол' means table, so 'Это стол' means 'This is a table'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Russian: 'This is a table.'

Это стол

Lesson#4
Because 'это' never changes, you can place any noun directly after it. The word for book is 'книга', and the word for house is 'дом'. To say 'This is a book', you say 'Это книга', and to say 'This is a house', you say 'Это дом'.
Quiz#5
Translate into Russian: 'This is a book.'

Это книга

Quiz#6
Translate into Russian: 'This is a house.'

Это дом
