Swedish Regular Present Tense Verb Morphology

Master Swedish regular present-tense verb morphology and learn to form invariant present verbs across Groups 1, 2, 3, and strong verbs.
A candid, vibrant photograph captures a group of young Swedes enjoying fika outdoors on a sunny day, sitting at a wooden table in a picturesque park or by a lake. They are engaged in lively conversation, with one person casually holding a book or a smartphone, embodying everyday actions like speaking, reading, and living in Sweden.

Lesson#1
In Swedish, verbs are refreshingly simple because they do not change for different people. Whether you say I, we, or they, the verb form stays exactly the same. In this deck, you will learn how to form and use the present tense for all subjects.
Lesson#2
Most Swedish verbs belong to Group 1. These verbs end in the letter A in their basic dictionary form, and you simply add an R to form the present tense, giving the ending A R. For example, 'tala' means 'to speak', and 'talar' means 'speaks'. 'Jag talar svenska' means 'I speak Swedish'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Swedish: 'I speak Swedish.'

Jag talar svenska

Lesson#4
Another very common Group 1 verb is 'prata', which also means 'to speak' or 'to talk'. Adding an R gives the present tense 'pratar'. 'Engelska' means 'English', so 'du pratar engelska' means 'you speak English'.
Quiz#5
Speaking to a friend, translate into Swedish: 'You speak English.'

Du pratar engelska

Lesson#6
Swedish present-tense verbs express both what you do habitually and what you are doing right now. Swedish does not use an extra verb like 'is' for ongoing actions. The Group 1 verb 'jobba' means 'to work', and its present form is 'jobbar'. 'Han jobbar' means both 'he works' and 'he is working'.
