Lesson#1
In spoken Dutch, you constantly choose between the simple past, or OVT, and the present perfect, or VTT. You use the simple past to paint the ongoing background scene or state. You use the present perfect to report a single, completed event that stepped into that scene.
Lesson#2
When an ongoing past activity is interrupted by a completed action, the ongoing background uses the simple past, while the interruption uses the present perfect. For example, 'Hij sliep, maar de postbode heeft het pakket bezorgd' means 'He was sleeping, but the postman delivered the parcel'.
