A vibrant photograph of friends gathered in a cozy, bright Dutch living room, sunlight streaming through a window. One friend, holding a basket filled with fresh fruit and a bottle of wine, is warmly welcomed by another, their hands reaching out in a gesture of shared hospitality. The scene embodies a sense of coming together.

Lesson#1
In Dutch main clauses, separable verbs split apart: the conjugated verb sits in second position, and the prefix moves to the end. In subordinate clauses introduced by words like 'omdat', 'als', or 'dat', the opposite happens. The prefix and the conjugated verb recombine into an unseparated word at the very end of the clause.
Lesson#2
In a main clause, 'opstaan' splits: 'Ik sta om zeven uur op'. In a subordinate clause, 'op' and 'staan' recombine at the end. For example, 'Ik blijf thuis, omdat ik vroeg opsta' means 'I am staying at home because I get up early'. For 'hij', it becomes 'opstaat', as in 'omdat hij vroeg opstaat'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Dutch: 'I am staying at home because I get up early.'

Ik blijf thuis omdat ik vroeg opsta

Quiz#4
Translate into Dutch: 'She knows that he gets up early.'

Zij weet dat hij vroeg opstaat

Quiz#5
Translate into Dutch: 'We are tired if we get up early.'

Wij zijn moe als we vroeg opstaan

Lesson#6
With the verb 'opruimen', a main clause splits: 'Hij ruimt zijn kamer op'. In a subordinate clause, the prefix and stem join together at the end. For example, 'Zij helpt hem, als hij zijn kamer opruimt' means 'She helps him if he tidies his room'.
