AQA GCSE Spanish Higher Tier: Approaching Literary Texts

Develop the skills to understand and answer questions on short, authentic literary texts as required for the Higher Tier Reading paper. This deck focuses on identifying key information, understanding literary vocabulary, and interpreting meaning.

A wide-angle, dramatic photograph of a winding, dusty road stretching across sun-drenched, rolling hills in a classic Spanish landscape. In the distance, a few historic windmills stand against a clear blue sky, evoking a sense of an unfolding journey and an 'once upon a time' story. A lone, silhouetted figure walks along the road, looking towards the horizon, symbolizing a protagonist embarking on a narrative.

Lesson#1
Welcome to the deck on approaching literary texts for the AQA GCSE Spanish Higher Tier exam. This skill is tested in the reading paper, where you'll be given a short extract from a story or novel. The questions will test your ability to understand not just what is said, but how the story is told.
Lesson#2
When you first see the text, read it through once to understand the 'gist', or the main idea. Ask yourself: Who are the characters? Where and when is this happening? What is the main event? Don't worry about every single unknown word on this first read; focus on the overall picture.
Quiz#3
What is the Spanish word for a character in a story?

el personaje

Quiz#4
What is the Spanish word for the plot or storyline?

la trama

Quiz#5
What is the Spanish term for the setting or atmosphere of a story?

el ambiente

Lesson#6
A key skill is understanding how verb tenses create the story's timeline. The preterite tense is used for completed actions that move the plot forward. Think of these as the main events in the story. For instance, 'Llegó, vio y se fue' means 'He arrived, he saw, and he left'.
