Talking About People and Objects You See

Master the Russian accusative plural animacy rule across all genders to talk about the people and objects you see, meet, and describe.

A medium close-up, candid photograph of an elderly Russian artisan with kind eyes and weathered hands, meticulously carving a wooden figurine in a sunlit workshop. The background is softly blurred, revealing shelves laden with unique, handcrafted wooden toys, intricate tools, and colourful textiles, emphasizing the rich textures and details of both the person and their creations.

Lesson#1
When you talk about people or objects you see, meet, or buy in Russian, direct objects take the accusative case. In the singular, only masculine animate nouns change to match the genitive. In the plural, Russian extends this animacy rule across all genders: living beings match their genitive plural, while inanimate objects match their nominative plural.
Lesson#2
For inanimate objects, the accusative plural is identical to the nominative plural, regardless of gender. Masculine and neuter inanimate nouns do not change their form when they are direct objects. For example, 'Я покупаю билеты' means 'I am buying tickets'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Russian: 'I am buying tickets.'

Я покупаю билеты

Quiz#4
Translate into Russian: 'We see tables.'

Мы видим столы

Quiz#5
Translate into Russian: 'We see buildings.'

Мы видим здания

Lesson#6
Feminine inanimate nouns also match their nominative plural in the accusative. Unlike in the singular, where feminine direct objects take a different ending, in the plural inanimate objects simply keep their standard nominative plural ending. For example, 'Я читаю книги' means 'I am reading books'.
