Lesson#1
Welcome to this deck on Sikh Beliefs and Teachings for AQA GCSE Religious Studies. We will cover everything you need to know, from the nature of God as described in the Mool Mantra, to the ultimate goal of human life, which is achieving liberation, or mukti. Mastering these core beliefs is essential for understanding Sikh practices and for achieving a top grade in your exam.
Lesson#2
Sikhism is a monotheistic religion, which means Sikhs believe in only one God. This core belief is the foundation of everything else. The teachings of the Gurus, which explain this belief, are collected in the Sikh holy scripture. This book is treated as the living Guru, the ultimate source of authority for all Sikhs.
Quiz#3
What is the name of the Sikh holy scripture, which is considered the living Guru?

Guru Granth Sahib

Lesson#4
The Guru Granth Sahib begins with a powerful statement of belief called the Mool Mantra. Mool means 'main' or 'root', and Mantra means 'statement'. It was composed by the first Guru, Guru Nanak, and it summarises the Sikh understanding of God. For your exam, the Mool Mantra is the most important piece of evidence for any question about the Sikh nature of God.
Quiz#5
Which Guru composed the Mool Mantra, the foundation of Sikh belief?

Guru Nanak

Lesson#6
The Mool Mantra begins with 'Ik Onkar', meaning 'There is only one God'. This rejects the idea of multiple gods and establishes Sikhism's strict monotheism. It is followed by 'Satnam', which means 'True name'. This shows that God's nature is truth itself.
