Lesson#1
In this deck, we'll explore England's involvements overseas between 1189 and 1204. This was a dramatic period dominated by two key events: the Third Crusade, led by King Richard the First, and the long, expensive struggle to defend English lands in France, which ultimately ended with King John losing the vital territory of Normandy.
Lesson#2
First, let's understand the concept of crusading. A crusade was a holy war, called for by the Pope, with the primary aim of recapturing Christian holy sites, especially Jerusalem, from Muslim control. For those who joined, it was seen as an act of religious pilgrimage and devotion. The Pope offered a powerful spiritual incentive: the remission of all sins for those who took part.
Quiz#3
In the medieval period, what was the term for a holy war called for by the Pope to reclaim Christian territory?

A crusade

Quiz#4
What spiritual reward did the Pope promise to Christians who went on a crusade?

Remission of sins

Lesson#5
People from England joined the crusades for a mix of reasons. For knights, it was a chance to fulfil their religious duties and use their military skills for God. But there were worldly motivations too. Younger sons who wouldn't inherit land saw it as a chance to win wealth and territory. Others went to escape debts or legal troubles at home. For everyone, it was a chance for glory and adventure.
Quiz#6
Besides religious duty, what was a common material motivation for knights to join a crusade?

Gaining wealth and land
