Russian: Location Versus Destination

Learn to distinguish static location answering Где from motion destination answering Куда with Russian prepositions в and на.

Lesson#1
In this deck, you will learn to navigate the difference between static location and motion towards a destination in Russian. You will practise choosing between the questions Где, meaning where at rest, and Куда, meaning where to in motion. By comparing prepositions and case endings across everyday places, you will make your descriptions of location and movement natural and accurate.
Lesson#2
When talking about an enclosed masculine place like a shop or a bank, pay attention to whether you are at rest or on the move. For static location answering the question Где, the noun takes the prepositional ending E, as in в магазине. For motion destination answering the question Куда, an inanimate masculine noun keeps its basic form with no ending change, as in в магазин.
Quiz#3
Speaking politely, translate into Russian: 'Where are you? I am in the shop.'

Где вы? Я в магазине

Quiz#4
Speaking politely, translate into Russian: 'Where are you going? I am going to the shop.'

Куда вы идёте? Я иду в магазин

Quiz#5
Translate into Russian: 'We are in the bank, and they are going to the bank.'

Мы в банке, а они идут в банк

Lesson#6
Open spaces and transit hubs like railway stations and stadiums take the preposition 'на' instead of 'В'. For static presence answering Где, add the prepositional ending E, giving на вокзале or на стадионе. When heading there, answering the question Куда, keep the noun in its basic form, giving на вокзал or на стадион.
