In Russian, you do not say that you are a certain age. Instead, you say how many years there are to you, using the dative case. In this deck, you will learn how to ask people their age and how to state your own and others' ages using the correct count words for years.

To ask someone their age, you use the question word 'сколько', meaning 'how much' or 'how many', followed by the dative pronoun and the word 'лет'. When speaking informally to a friend, a child, or a peer, say 'Сколько тебе лет?'.

When you are speaking formally to a stranger, a colleague, or an elder, replace 'тебе' with the polite dative pronoun 'вам'. To ask politely, say 'Сколько вам лет?'.

To ask about someone else, use third-person dative pronouns. For a male, use 'ему' to ask 'Сколько ему лет?'. For a female, use 'ей' to ask 'Сколько ей лет?'.
