We write ratios using a colon. For example, if a recipe needs 2 cups of flour for every 3 cups of sugar, we write the ratio of flour to sugar as 2 colon 3. The order is very important. The ratio 2 to 3 is different from the ratio 3 to 2.

Just like fractions, ratios can often be simplified. To do this, you find the highest common factor of all the numbers in the ratio, and then divide each number by it. For example, the ratio 6 to 9 can be simplified. The highest common factor of 6 and 9 is 3. Dividing both numbers by 3 gives 2 to 3.
