The main challenge with an equation like '5x plus 2 equals 3x plus 10' is that the x terms are on different sides. The first goal is always to gather all the terms with an x onto one side of the equals sign, and all the plain number terms onto the other side.

A good strategy is to find the smallest term with an unknown in it. In the equation '5x plus 2 equals 3x plus 10', the two x-terms are '5x' and '3x'. The smaller one is '3x'.
