In physics, we say that energy is stored in different ways. Imagine them like different bank accounts for energy. There are eight main energy stores you need to know. These are: kinetic, gravitational potential, elastic potential, chemical, thermal, nuclear, magnetic, and electrostatic. We'll go through what each of these means.

The first energy store is the kinetic energy store. Anything that is moving has energy in its kinetic store. The faster it moves, or the more mass it has, the more energy is in its kinetic store. Think of a moving car or a cricket ball thrown through the air.

Next is potential energy, which is stored energy waiting to be released. There are several types. Gravitational potential energy is the energy stored in an object because of its height in a gravitational field. A book on a high shelf or a diver on a diving board has gravitational potential energy.
