When you see a calculation with several different operations, like plus, minus, and times, it's important that everyone performs them in the same order to get the same answer. For example, in the calculation 2 plus 3 times 4, you could get two different results. To avoid this confusion, mathematicians agreed on a standard order of operations.

In the UK, the easiest way to remember this order is with the acronym BIDMAS. That's B, I, D, M, A, S. Each letter stands for a different type of operation, telling you the sequence to follow.
