GCSE Maths: Circle Theorems

Learn the main circle theorems and how to state them. This deck covers the rules for angles at the centre, angles in a semicircle, cyclic quadrilaterals, tangents, and the alternate segment theorem. Note: Applying these rules to diagrams requires desk practice.

Lesson#1
Welcome to this deck on circle theorems. Circle theorems are a set of rules that connect angles, chords, and tangents within a circle. Mastering them is key for geometry problems at GCSE Higher Tier. In this deck, we'll learn to state each of the main theorems in words.
Lesson#2
It is critical to understand that circle theorems are a very visual topic. While we will learn the rules here, you must apply them to diagrams to become fluent. We strongly recommend practising with pen and paper from a textbook or past exam questions after completing this deck.
Lesson#3
First, let's cover some key terms. A line segment from the centre of a circle to the circumference is a radius. A line segment that passes through the centre and has its endpoints on the circle is a diameter. A line segment connecting two points on the circumference without passing through the centre is a chord.
Quiz#4
What is the name for a line segment from the centre of a circle to its circumference?

radius

Quiz#5
What is the name for a line segment that joins two points on a circle's circumference and passes through the centre?

diameter

Quiz#6
What is the name for a line segment that joins two points on a circle's circumference but does not pass through the centre?

chord
