The traditional system of classification was developed in the 18th century by a Swedish scientist named Carl Linnaeus. He created a hierarchical system, which means it has different levels, a bit like folders inside folders on a computer. Organisms are sorted into large groups, which are then divided into progressively smaller groups with more and more features in common.

The Linnaean system has seven main levels. From largest to smallest, they are: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. A good way to remember this order is with a mnemonic like 'King Prawn Curry Or Fat Greasy Sausages'. The Kingdom is the broadest group, and the Species is the most specific.
