When you see a number with a small number written slightly above it to the right, you're looking at a power, also known as an index. For example, 5 with a small 2 is read as '5 to the power of 2' or '5 squared'. The main number is called the base, and the small number is the power or index.

Let's start with square numbers. A square number is what you get when you multiply a whole number by itself. For example, 3 multiplied by 3 gives the square number 9. It's called a square number because you could arrange 9 dots into a 3 by 3 square.
