German A2: Simple Relative Clauses

Learn to use simple German relative clauses with der, die, das, den, and dem to describe people and things more clearly in the nominative, accusative, and dative cases.
A wide-angle, atmospheric photograph of a majestic, ancient stone bridge arching gracefully over a tranquil river in a picturesque German landscape, bathed in golden hour light. The bridge's robust structure elegantly connects the two riverbanks, with lush greenery and distant quaint buildings softly illuminated, composed for a 3:2 landscape frame.

Lesson#1
Sometimes you want to add extra information about a person or thing you're talking about. In German, you can do this with a relative clause. It's a short phrase that starts with a word like 'der', 'die', or 'das' and has its verb at the very end.
Lesson#2
Let's start with the nominative case. You use this when the person or thing you're describing is doing the action in the extra phrase. The relative pronoun acts like 'who' or 'that' and must match the gender of the noun. For example, 'Das ist der Mann, der hier wohnt' means 'That is the man who lives here'.
Quiz#3
Translate into German: 'That is the man who lives here.'

Das ist der Mann, der hier wohnt.

Quiz#4
Translate into German: 'I'm looking for the woman who speaks Spanish.'

Ich suche die Frau, die Spanisch spricht.

Quiz#5
Translate into German: 'This is the car that is very fast.'

Das ist das Auto, das sehr schnell ist.

Lesson#6
For plural nouns in the nominative, the relative pronoun is always 'die', no matter the gender of the individual nouns. For instance, 'Das sind die Kinder, die im Garten spielen' means 'Those are the children who are playing in the garden'.
