Welcome to this deck on percentages of amounts. A percentage is just a special type of fraction, meaning 'out of one hundred'. In this deck, we'll cover three key skills. First, how to find a percentage of an amount without a calculator. Second, how to do it with a calculator. And third, how to express one number as a percentage of another.

Let's start with non-calculator methods. The trick is to use easy percentages as building blocks. The most useful ones are 50 percent, 10 percent, and 1 percent, because they are easy to find from any starting amount.

Now we can use these building blocks. To find 5 percent of an amount, you can first find 10 percent, and then halve that answer. For example, to find 5 percent of 80, you first find 10 percent, which is 8. Then you halve 8 to get 4. So, 5 percent of 80 is 4.
