In this deck, we'll explore what life was like for ordinary people in Mao's China, from the communist victory in 1949 to Mao's death in 1976. To maintain power, the Chinese Communist Party, or CCP, needed to control not just what people did, but also what they thought. They used a combination of propaganda, censorship, and thought control. Propaganda was everywhere – in newspapers, on the radio, through loudspeakers in the streets, and on giant posters. The aim was to create a 'cult of Mao', presenting him as a god-like figure who was wise, kind, and the saviour of China.

Censorship was the other side of the coin to propaganda. The CCP controlled all media, so no ideas that challenged the official government line could be published or broadcast. For those who openly opposed the regime or were considered 'class enemies', a harsher method was used: the 'Reform Through Labour' system. This was a network of prison camps, known as the Laogai, where millions were sent for 're-education' through hard physical labour and political indoctrination.
