Let's start with the modern model of the atom. At the centre of every atom is a tiny, dense nucleus. This nucleus contains two types of particles: protons and neutrons. Orbiting the nucleus in distinct energy levels, or shells, are much smaller particles called electrons.

The three subatomic particles have specific relative masses and charges. Protons have a relative charge of plus one. Electrons have a relative charge of minus one. Neutrons, as their name suggests, are neutral, with a relative charge of zero. Because an atom has an equal number of protons and electrons, its overall charge is zero.
