Lesson#1
In this deck you will learn about two of the most important Buddhist festivals observed in Britain today: Wesak and Parinirvana Day. You will also learn about the role of retreats in Buddhist practice. These topics appear on the AQA GCSE Religious Studies specification, and knowing them well will give you strong material for 4-mark and 5-mark exam answers. Let us start with Wesak, the most widely celebrated Buddhist festival in the world.
Lesson#2
Wesak, sometimes written Vesak, is the most important festival in the Buddhist calendar. It is remarkable because it commemorates not one but three events in the life of the Buddha: his birth, his Enlightenment, and his death, which Buddhists call his parinirvana. All three events are believed to have occurred on the same day of the year, the full moon of the month of Vaisakha, which usually falls in May. The name Wesak comes from the Pali word for that month. Because it celebrates the entire arc of the Buddha's life and spiritual achievement in a single day, Wesak is sometimes described as the most complete expression of what Buddhism is about.
