First, let's recap what antibodies are. They are proteins produced by a type of white blood cell called a B-lymphocyte. Each antibody is highly specific, meaning it will only bind to one particular type of molecule, known as an antigen. This specificity is key to how our immune system targets pathogens.

Scientists wanted to harness this specificity to create medical treatments. The challenge was to produce large quantities of a single, specific type of antibody. The solution was monoclonal antibodies. The name tells you what they are: 'mono' means one, and 'clonal' means they come from a clone of cells. So, they are a collection of identical antibodies, all produced from a single clone of cells, that target one specific antigen.
