The first step is to react the acid and the insoluble base. You start by gently warming the acid in a beaker, usually over a Bunsen burner. This is done to increase the rate of reaction. Then, you add the insoluble base, like copper oxide powder, to the warm acid and stir. You keep adding the base until no more will dissolve, and you can see some unreacted solid at the bottom. This is known as adding the base in excess.
