The first step to a great answer is to develop it beyond a simple 'yes' or 'no'. A simple and effective method for this is the 'Point, Reason, Example' structure. This helps you to extend your answers naturally and show off your language skills.

Let's break that down. The 'Point' is your direct answer to the question. If the examiner asks, 'Was machst du gern in deiner Freizeit?', meaning 'What do you like to do in your free time?', your point might be, 'Ich spiele gern Fußball', 'I like to play football'.

Next comes the 'Reason'. This is where you explain why, using a connecting word like 'denn' or 'weil', which both mean 'because'. For example, 'Ich spiele gern Fußball, weil es Spaß macht.' Be careful: 'weil' is a subordinating conjunction, so it sends the verb to the end of the clause. 'Denn' is a coordinating conjunction, so the normal word order follows.
