First, let's look at how we measure a country's development. One of the most common ways is to look at its wealth. A key economic measure is Gross National Income, or GNI, per head. This is the total value of goods and services produced by a country in a year, including money from overseas, divided by its population.

However, using a single economic measure like GNI per head has limitations. For example, it's an average, so it hides inequality. A few very wealthy people can make the average GNI seem high, even if most of the population is poor. It also doesn't count work in the informal economy, like street sellers or subsistence farmers.
