So, what is a surd? A surd is a way of writing an irrational number exactly, using a square root sign. It's the square root of a number that isn't a perfect square. For example, the square root of 2 is a surd because 2 is not a square number. The same goes for the square root of 3, 5, or 6. However, the square root of 9 is not a surd, because it's exactly 3.
