AQA GCSE Physics: Required Practical - Resistance

Covers the method for Required Practical 3: investigating the factors affecting resistance, focusing on the length of a wire. Includes the circuit diagram, variables, method, and potential errors such as heating effects.
A dramatic, close-up photograph of a physics experiment in progress, composed for a 3:2 landscape. A length of resistance wire is precisely stretched across a wooden metre ruler on a laboratory workbench. A student's hand, partially visible, is carefully adjusting a metallic crocodile clip along the wire, while another clip is already secured. In the softly blurred background, electrical meters and connecting wires are visible, capturing the meticulous nature of scientific measurement.

Lesson#1
In this deck, you'll learn about the AQA Required Practical for investigating the factors that affect electrical resistance. We'll focus on how the length of a wire changes its resistance. You'll learn about the circuit you need to build, the variables involved, the step-by-step method, and common sources of error.
Lesson#2
To carry out this investigation, you need to build a specific series circuit. It contains a power supply, an ammeter, and the length of resistance wire. A voltmeter is then connected in parallel across the resistance wire. The ammeter measures the current flowing through the wire, and the voltmeter measures the potential difference across it. Drawing this circuit diagram is a key skill, so we recommend you practise this on paper.
Quiz#3
In an electrical circuit, what piece of equipment is used to measure current?

ammeter

Quiz#4
How must an ammeter be connected in a circuit to measure the current through a component?

in series

Quiz#5
In an electrical circuit, what piece of equipment is used to measure potential difference?

voltmeter

Quiz#6
How must a voltmeter be connected to measure the potential difference across a component?

in parallel
