Typhoon Haiyan, known locally as Typhoon Yolanda, made landfall in the Philippines in November 2013. It was a Category 5 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale, which is the highest possible category. This means it had incredibly strong winds and brought enormous amounts of rain.

The impacts of a hazard are split into two types. Primary effects are the direct results of the storm itself. For Typhoon Haiyan, this included winds of up to 315 kilometres per hour, heavy rainfall, and most devastatingly, a massive storm surge. A storm surge is a rise in sea level caused by the storm's winds, which pushes a huge wall of water onto the coast.
