GCSE Maths: Averages from Frequency Tables

Master the techniques for finding key statistical averages—mode, median, and mean—from both discrete and grouped frequency tables. This deck breaks down the methods step-by-step, focusing on the concepts behind the calculations.
This is a wide-angle shot of a narrow, cobblestone street in a European-style town at dusk. Buildings with beige or light brown facades line both sides of the street, featuring stone accents, small balconies with black iron railings, and flower pots. A warm, golden light emanates from the windows of some buildings, particularly one in the foreground where a person is working on a laptop, a bookshelf illuminated behind them. The street is subtly lit by glowing street lamps. A few people are walking down the street in the distance. The sky is a blend of blue and orange, suggesting the sun has recently set. The overall style is realistic with a focus on capturing the ambiance of a historic town.

Lesson#1
Welcome to this deck on averages from frequency tables. Sometimes, we have so much data that listing it all out is impractical. A frequency table is a neat way to organise this data, showing how many times each value or group of values appears. In this lesson, you'll learn how to find the mode, the median, and an estimate for the mean, all directly from a frequency table.
Lesson#2
Let's start with the mode. Remember, the mode is the most common value. In a frequency table, the 'frequency' column tells you how many times each value appears. So, to find the mode, you just need to look for the highest number in the frequency column. The data value associated with that highest frequency is your mode.
Quiz#3
In a frequency table, the mode is the data value that has what?

the highest frequency

Lesson#4
Often, data is grouped into classes or intervals, like heights between 150 and 160 centimetres. This is called a grouped frequency table. Because we don't know the exact values within a group, we can't find an exact mode. Instead, we find the modal class.
Quiz#5
What is the term for the group with the highest frequency in a grouped frequency table?

modal class

Quiz#6
In a grouped frequency table, the modal class is the one with what?

the highest frequency
