Let's start with perimeter. The perimeter is simply the total distance around the outside of a 2D shape. Imagine walking along the very edge of a field; the total distance you walk is its perimeter. To find it, you just add up the lengths of all the sides.

Next is area. While perimeter measures the outside edge, area measures the amount of flat space a shape covers. Think of it as the amount of paint you would need to cover the entire surface. Area is measured in square units, like square centimetres or square metres.

Let's look at a rectangle. To find its perimeter, you add the lengths of its four sides. For its area, the rule is simpler: you just multiply its length by its width. This is a formula you need to remember as it's not usually given in exams.
