In this deck, you'll learn about vectors. A vector is a quantity that has both a size, or magnitude, and a direction. We'll cover how to write vectors, how to add, subtract, and multiply them, and how you can use them to solve geometry problems.
Lesson#2
Think about giving someone directions. If you say 'walk 500 metres', you've given them a distance, but not a direction. That's a scalar quantity. If you say 'walk 500 metres north', you've given them both a distance and a direction. That's a vector. In maths, we often think of vectors as a journey or a displacement from one point to another.

One of the most common ways to write a vector is as a column vector. This looks like two numbers written one on top of the other, inside a pair of brackets. The top number tells you the movement in the horizontal, or x-direction. A positive number means right, and a negative number means left. The bottom number tells you the movement in the vertical, or y-direction. Positive means up, and negative means down.
