AQA GCSE Geography: Paper 3 - Applying Fieldwork Skills

Learn how to apply your knowledge of the enquiry process to both human and physical geography fieldwork contexts. This deck covers common methods for data collection, presentation, and analysis that you will be tested on in the exam.

A dramatic, low-angle, close-up photograph of the bed of a clear, flowing river. Smooth, wet river pebbles of various sizes and colours are visible beneath the gently rippling water, with sunlight glinting on the surface, composed for a 3:2 landscape frame.

Lesson#1
Welcome to this deck on applying fieldwork skills for your GCSE Geography Paper 3 exam. In the previous deck, we covered the enquiry process. Now, we'll focus on how to apply that knowledge in practice. You'll learn how to justify your methods, present and analyse data effectively, and evaluate your entire investigation, which are all crucial skills for earning top marks.
Lesson#2
In the exam, you won't just be asked to name a data collection method; you'll need to justify it. This means explaining why your chosen method is the most appropriate for your specific enquiry. For example, if you're investigating how a river's cross-profile changes downstream, you might choose systematic sampling. Your justification would be that taking measurements at regular intervals, say every 200 metres, provides unbiased and representative coverage of the river's long profile.
Quiz#3
In a fieldwork justification, what sampling method involves selecting data points at regular, fixed intervals?

systematic sampling

Quiz#4
What type of sampling gives every person or location an equal chance of being selected for a geographical enquiry?

random sampling

Quiz#5
What sampling method involves selecting people or locations that fit specific criteria, such as age or gender, to reflect the wider population?

stratified sampling

Quiz#6
If investigating how land use changes with distance from a city centre, what is the most appropriate sampling strategy to ensure even coverage?

systematic sampling
