Before the modern periodic table, scientists tried to arrange elements in different ways. One of the most successful early attempts was by a Russian chemist named Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869. He arranged the elements mainly in order of their atomic weight, but he did something brilliant. If an element didn't fit the properties of a group, he would swap its position, trusting chemical properties over strict atomic weight order.

Mendeleev's true genius was in what he left out. He realised that some elements were missing, so he left gaps in his table for them. He even predicted the properties of these undiscovered elements based on the patterns in his table. When these elements were later discovered and matched his predictions, it gave his table huge credibility.
