To calculate the rate of a reaction, you need to know two things: the amount of a reactant used up or product formed, and the time it took. The equation is simple: the mean rate of reaction equals the amount of reactant used, or product formed, divided by the time. For example, if you collect 10 cubic centimetres of a gas in 20 seconds, the rate is 10 divided by 20, which is 0.5 cubic centimetres per second.
