Let's start with concentration. When you dissolve a substance, like salt, in a liquid, like water, you create a solution. The concentration of that solution tells you how much of the substance, or solute, is dissolved in a certain amount of the liquid, or solvent. In GCSE Chemistry, we usually measure concentration in grams per decimetre cubed.

To calculate concentration, you use a simple formula. Concentration equals the mass of the solute in grams, divided by the volume of the solvent in decimetres cubed. Remember that one decimetre cubed is the same as one litre.
