We'll explore why food, water, and energy are so vital for our well-being and economic development. We will then focus on the UK, looking at the specific challenges and strategies involved in managing these three essential resources.

Food, water, and energy are fundamental to human well-being. Without enough nutritious food, people suffer from undernutrition, which limits their ability to work and can cause serious health issues. Clean water is essential not just for drinking, but for sanitation, growing food, and industry. And energy powers our homes, transports our goods, and drives our entire economy. A country's access to these three resources is a major factor in its level of development.

Let's turn our focus to the UK, starting with food. The UK imports about forty percent of its food, which means much of what we eat travels a long way to get to our plates. The distance food is transported is known as 'food miles'. High food miles are an environmental concern because the transport, especially by air, releases greenhouse gases, contributing to a larger carbon footprint.
