AQA GCSE Chemistry: Understand Energy Changes in Reactions

Defines exothermic and endothermic reactions. Covers the interpretation of reaction profiles, including activation energy. Includes calculating overall energy change from bond energies (Higher Tier).
A dramatic wide-angle photograph of a roaring bonfire at night in a snowy forest. Intense flames and sparks fly upwards, casting warm, orange light onto the surrounding dark trees and glistening snow, evoking both intense heat release and the stark contrast with cold surroundings.

Lesson#1
In this deck, you'll explore energy changes in chemical reactions. All reactions involve an energy change, and we can classify them based on whether they release energy or take it in. You'll learn the key terms 'exothermic' and 'endothermic', how to represent these changes on diagrams called reaction profiles, and how to explain them in terms of breaking and making chemical bonds.
Quiz#2
What is transferred into or out of the surroundings during every chemical reaction?

energy

Lesson#3
Let's start with exothermic reactions. The prefix 'exo' means 'out', like in 'exit'. An exothermic reaction is one that transfers energy to the surroundings, usually as heat. This means the temperature of the surroundings increases. Think of a bonfire or a hand warmer – they both give out heat because of exothermic reactions.
Quiz#4
What is the term for a chemical reaction that transfers energy to the surroundings?

exothermic

Quiz#5
During an exothermic reaction, does the temperature of the surroundings increase or decrease?

increase

Quiz#6
Combustion, such as burning fuel, is a common example of what type of reaction?

exothermic
