Welcome to this deck on averages and range. When we have a list of data, we often want to summarise it with a single number. We can do this using an 'average'. We'll look at the three main types: the mode, the median, and the mean. We'll also learn about the range, which tells us how spread out the data is.

Let's start with the simplest average, the mode. The mode is simply the value that appears most often in a list of data. Think of 'mode' and 'most' - they both start with 'M O'. If you have the list of numbers 2, 3, 5, 5, 8, the number 5 appears twice, while all the others appear once. So, the mode is 5.

Next is the median. The median is the middle value, but there's a crucial first step: the data must be in order from smallest to largest. If you forget to order the data, you will get the wrong answer. Think of the median strip in the middle of a motorway – it separates the two sides.
